Cell City
Phase 1: Jobs
- Meet with your group and decide who will take on the following jobs:
- The Architect/City Planner - You should enjoy drawing/graphic design. You will be creating the blueprint for your city.
- The City Builder - You should like building things. You will be in charge of the construction of your city.
- The Reporter - You should enjoy writing and keeping track of things. You will be completing your city's paperwork.
- Discuss with your group how you would like to represent a cell. For example: A modern city or town, a medieval village, or futuristic space outpost, etc.
- Give your city a name.
- Decide how to represent each organelle within your "city."
- Reporter: Begin to fill in the Organelle Representation in City document.
- Architect: Draw a rough draft (by hand) of how your city might look. Later, it will be completed in Fireworks.
- Builder: Create a brainstorm list of materials that could be used to build your city. For example: popsicle sticks, Legos, cardboard, toys, paint, Q-tips, construction paper, paint, cans, milk cartons/bottles , string, tape, hot glue, twigs, rocks etc. You will be given a base on which to build.
- Reporter: Design labels for each of the cell structures (check out the label templates in Microsoft Word).
- Architect: Create final blueprint in Fireworks (This could be used as a "ground" map on the base).
- Builder: Assign materials and construction tasks. Help the others.
- Be sure that all workers have specific tasks to complete, adequate materials, and are building to the correct scale, etc.
- Construct buildings, roads, rivers, vehicles, people, etc.
- Begin a 'dry layout' of your city. This means that you may place your objects on your city base, but don't glue them on yet.
- Finish the construction of buildings, roads, rivers, vehicles, people, etc.
- Be sure that all workers have specific tasks to complete, adequate materials, are building to the correct scale, etc.
- Print final labels (spell-checked and consistent format) and attach carefully to cell structures.
- Each person must participate in the presentation.
- Show the blueprint and discuss the inspiration behind the city.
- Take turns pointing out each cell structure and how it is represented within your city.
